Digital recording of aboriginal rock art
نویسندگان
چکیده
A technique to digitally document and thereby permanently preserve prehistoric rock art has been developed. Laser scanning and texture mapping from digital images were used. Methods involving texture mapping require the exact relationships between the image and geometrical sensors. For geological structures, such as caves, the distinctive features required for registering the texture with the geometric model are difficult to find and extract. The developed technique combines a photogrammetric bundle adjustment and surveying observations to selected detail points to register the images with the scanner data, rather than searching for individual corresponding points. The technique is implemented and tested on Aboriginal paintings at the Baiame rock art cave in New South Wales, Australia. The result is an extremely realistic virtual tour of the cave and its important rock art.

Cost-effective Rock-art Recording in a Production Environment: Is There a Wider Message?
At the CIPA Congress held in 2005, the first author presented a paper which described the development of a simple, cost effective method to record and document rock-art (Chandler and Fryer, 2005). The approach combined simple stereo-pairs acquired with consumer-grade digital cameras, used control implemented by either a scale-bar or coordinated targets and utilized commercial photogrammetric so...

At the recent CIPA 2007 Congress, the authors presented a paper which described the development, application and refinement of a simple, cost effective method to record and document rock-art (Chandler and Bryan, 2007). This was based on prior development of a recording methodology for capturing Aboriginal rock-art (Chandler et al., 2005a), including both pictographs and petroglyphs, at a range ...

The Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Project (NADRAP), a three year English Heritage funded project formally completed in July 2008, set out to pilot a meth odology for creating an index of around 1,500 known rock art panels located across two counties of the north-east of England. Principally using around 60 volunteers recruited from the local community, this would provide a georeferenced d...

Because of the important role of rock mass structural properties on its mechanical behavior, determining the qualitative and quantitative properties of has been a subject of intense research. In this regard, numerous techniques such as scanline surveying, cell mapping, and geologic structure mapping have been proposed. However, applying such field surveying techniques for rock mass properties i...
